Halloween is still a few months away but I say it's the perfect time to get ready for the spooky season. If you grew up with your older siblings shooing you away whenever it's horror movie night, you might have grown afraid of scary movies.

You are now in your mid-20s and you think  'scary movies aren't probably that scary', so you put on a random one on Netflix or Disney+ but YOU STILL CAN'T WATCH IT. You are frustrated but you really want to watch one so you can finally understand that reference your crush usually makes in your conversations.

Here are my top 3 YouTube channels that can guide you through these "Not-So-Scary" scary movies.

Horror Mine

Being the youngest channel on the list, only born in November of 2020, Horror Mine is a channel that exudes so much potential. If you want to go in and out of a horror movie quick, this is the channel for you. There is not much facts or jokes but it gets straight to the point and gives you what you need without dragging you in too much into the horror. It's also home to the Scare Score where the host rates horror movies based on how scary it is or attempt to be. Just before April 2024 ended, this channel reached 100k subscribers. Congratulations!

FoundFlix

Started in July of 2015, FoundFlix is your one stop shop channel that can help you get started with all your horror needs. From the classics to the newest horror movies, to sci-fi and fantasy tv shows, FoundFlix has definitely got you covered. You won't really get scared with their comedic spoofs and explanations of the most spine-chilling horror movies ever produced.

Watching from this channel makes it feel like you are watching a horror movie, in the middle of a sunny day, with all of your friends, just there, holding your hand through it. You get the complete experience of that horror movie without getting your wits scared out of you.

Dead Meat

Dead Meat is one of my favorite horror movie channel ever. It houses the Kill Count, where they tally up the victims in all our favorite horror movies and is hosted by James A. Janisse. In March 2024, Dead Meat expanded and has now a second channel, Dead Meat Presents. Here you can find What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?, various interviews, and so much more. In the same channel, they moved the video format of the Dead Meat Podcast by Chelsea Rebecca, where they do a deep dive discussion of various topics of various horror movies and series. They announced in May 2024 that they have decided to make the first channel entirely for their Kill Count videos.

Counting up the victims in horror movies is not the only thing they do in the Kill Count, James not only shows the good and the bad of these movies; he also thoroughly explains the production process and gives the audience behind the scene facts.

Honorable Mention

Spikima Movies

Spikima Movies on Youtube is the most serious channel in this list. Symbolism, color, tone of the movie, dialogs, etc. This channels explains details in (not only) horror movies in the most delicate way that lets you see these movies as a work of art, rather than just something that will simply give you a jump scare. It lets you in in the secret these movies hides in plain sight that when you eventually decide to watch the movie, you'll no longer be scared(that much) for you will start to see the story and intentions hiding behind the horror.

Movies Reviewed in this channel:

Hereditary(2018), Midsommar(2019), A tale of two sisters(2003), Vivarium(2019)

These channels helped me get over my fear of watching horror movies/series that I can now enjoy watching it whether I am all alone or at night, or even all alone at night! It helped me change how I see horror movies. So much so that I have realized that these movies are more that just cheap scares — just like any other genre of movies, it has just as much story to tell; that underneath that unapproachable facade hides the soul of the free and artistic nature of the human soul.

Get your snacks and blanket and get ready to answer the question — are you brave enough to listen to the scary stories they tell in the dark(wink wink)?
